Abraham Lincoln served as the 16th President during the nation's greatest crisis, the Civil War. His leadership preserved the Union, and his Emancipation Proclamation (1863) began the process of ending slavery. His Gettysburg Address redefined the meaning of American democracy. Lincoln was assassinated by John Wilkes Booth on April 14, 1865, just days after the war ended.
