Nicknamed the "Little Giant," Douglas believed democracy meant settlers voting slavery up or down. Critics blamed him for repealing the Missouri Compromise line and unleashing Bleeding Kansas. He debated Lincoln in 1858 but lost Senate leverage while elevating Lincoln nationally.
