Frederick Douglass escaped slavery in 1838 and became the most prominent African American abolitionist, orator, and author of the 19th century. His autobiography, Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass, exposed the horrors of slavery. He advised President Lincoln during the Civil War and fought for the rights of African Americans and women throughout his life.
