Ulysses S. Grant rose from obscurity to become the commanding general of the Union Army. His victories at Vicksburg and in the Overland Campaign broke the Confederacy. As the 18th President (1869–1877), he worked to protect the rights of formerly enslaved people during Reconstruction and fought the Ku Klux Klan.
