Franklin D. Roosevelt (FDR) was elected president four times and led the United States through two of its greatest crises: the Great Depression and World War II. His New Deal programs reshaped the role of the federal government, and his wartime leadership helped the Allies defeat Nazi Germany and Imperial Japan. He died in office in April 1945, just months before the war ended.
