Dwight D. Eisenhower was the Supreme Commander of Allied forces in Europe during World War II and later the 34th President of the United States (1953-1961). He planned and executed Operation Overlord, the D-Day invasion of Normandy on June 6, 1944, the largest amphibious military operation in history. His ability to coordinate the massive Allied forces from multiple nations was crucial to the liberation of Western Europe. As President, he ended the Korean War, created NASA, built the Interstate Highway System, and managed Cold War tensions with the Soviet Union. His farewell address famously warned Americans about the growing power of the "military-industrial complex."
