Ronald Reagan served as the 40th President of the United States (1981-1989) and played a significant role in the final chapter of the Cold War. A former actor and governor of California, Reagan pursued a policy of "peace through strength," dramatically increasing military spending to pressure the Soviet Union. His famous speech at the Berlin Wall in 1987, where he declared "Mr. Gorbachev, tear down this wall!" became one of the most iconic moments of the Cold War. Reagan built a working relationship with Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev that led to arms reduction treaties. The Berlin Wall fell in November 1989, less than a year after Reagan left office, and the Soviet Union dissolved in 1991.
