Hestia

Greek mythology – Present

Goddess of the hearth, home, and the sacred fire; one of the original twelve Olympians, later sometimes replaced in the count by Dionysus.

Hestia was the Greek goddess of the hearth, the household fire, and the quiet center of home and city. She was a sister of Zeus, freed with Hera, Demeter, Poseidon, and Hades in the Titanomachy. Myths give her few adventures. That is the point: she stays. Every Greek house and many civic halls kept a hearth fire in her honor. Lists of the twelve Olympians sometimes swap her for Dionysus. Both versions are ancient. Hestia is the goddess of staying put; Dionysus is the god of festival and leaving yourself behind. Teaching the swap shows students that “the twelve” is a tradition, not a sealed roster. How we know. Hearth cult is archaeological and literary (Homer, the Homeric Hymn to Hestia). She is less a character in the Odyssey than a value the poem cares about: home. Pair her with Odysseus’s return to Ithaca and the Odyssey journey.
