Dionysus

Greek mythology Present

God of wine, theater, and ecstasy; sometimes counted among the twelve Olympians in place of Hestia.

greek mythologygodolympian
Dionysus was the Greek god of wine, revelry, and theater. Some lists of the twelve Olympians include Hestia, goddess of the hearth; later lists often swap in Dionysus. Both versions are ancient. Teach the swap: the “twelve” is a tradition, not a sealed roster. Athens created tragedy and comedy at festivals in his honor. That is historical. The god of losing yourself on purpose sits beside Apollo’s “nothing in excess”, a tension later writers loved. How we know. Theater of Dionysus on the south slope of the Acropolis is a real ruin. Delphi belongs to Apollo; drama belongs to Dionysus. Use the Oracle as the contrast, then the Odyssey journey.
