Socrates was an ancient Greek philosopher from Athens who is credited as the founder of Western philosophy. He developed the Socratic method, a form of dialogue based on asking and answering questions to stimulate critical thinking. He wrote nothing himself; his ideas are known through the writings of his students, especially Plato. He was sentenced to death by drinking hemlock for "corrupting the youth."
