George Washington led the Continental Army to victory in the American Revolution, presided over the Constitutional Convention, and served as the first President of the United States (1789–1797). He set many precedents for the new office, including the tradition of serving only two terms. Known as the "Father of His Country," Washington's leadership was essential to the founding of the nation.
