Use positives and negatives in context
How to do it:
1. Name what 0 means in the story (sea level, empty account, freezing, no charge).
2. Assign positive to one direction and negative to the opposite.
3. Write a number that matches the situation.
Worked example: A trail crew starts at ft (trailhead). They climb to ft, then descend ft. Their elevation is ft, which is 150 ft below the trailhead, not "negative hiking."
Check: an account of dollars is a debt. The absolute value is the size of the debt. Replay fractions and signs in the Fraction converter if a mixed number appears.
