Compose and decompose area
The jigsaw splitCut it into pieces you know
An odd-shaped garden bed is a jigsaw of rectangles and triangles. Decompose means cut the shape into pieces you already know, find each area, and add. You can also start with a big rectangle and subtract the piece that is missing.
Worked example: find the area of an L-shaped garden bed.
Step 1: One cut makes two rectangles: m by m and m by m.
Step 2: Big piece:
Step 3: Small piece:
Step 4: Add:
Count every piece once, and nothing twice.
Add the pieces
L shape:
• Cut into rectangles, then add.
• Area
Subtract the hole
by minus a by corner
• Full rectangle, then take away.
• square units.
Big mistake to avoid
Forgetting the cut-out. A by rectangle missing a by corner is square units, not
Cool math secret
You can cut the L the other way. A cut straight down gives plus still Area doesn't care how you slice it.
Try it with a tool
• Area of a Rectangle: set and for the big piece, then and for the small one.
