Why does a vague request usually get a vague answer from an AI?

Remember how AI works: it predicts a response based on the words you give it. It is not reading your mind, and it does not know your situation unless you tell it. So a vague request gives it almost nothing to work with, and you get a vague answer back. Clear, specific input gives it something to aim at. Think of it less like a search box and more like giving instructions to a very capable helper who only knows what you actually tell them.
• Give context. Say who it is for and what you are trying to do. "I'm a 7th grader studying for a test" changes the answer a lot.
• Be specific about what you want. Include the goal, the length, and the format. "Explain photosynthesis to a 6th grader in 3 short bullet points" beats "tell me about photosynthesis."
• Show the shape you want. Ask for a list, a table, or a step-by-step, or give a quick example of the style you are after.
• Iterate, do not settle. The first answer is a draft. Tell it what to change, "shorter," "simpler," "add an example," "now quiz me on it", and it usually gets much better. Refining beats starting over.

"Give me a hint, not the answer." "Explain this two different ways." "Quiz me on what I just read." "Check my reasoning and point out where I went wrong." It quickly shows everyone that the results you get from AI are largely in your hands, which is a genuinely empowering thing to learn.
AI is far more useful to people who know how to ask. You do not need secret tricks or magic phrases; you need to give context, be specific, show the shape you want, and refine the result. Do that, and you turn a hit-or-miss tool into a reliable one, with you clearly in the driver's seat.
