Spot an exponential function
The rumorThe rumor
Two friends start a rumor, and each hour everyone who knows it tells times as many people: then then then
• The amount isn't going up by the same number each hour. It is going up by the same factor:
• A constant factor is the fingerprint of an exponential function.
Worked example: is this table linear, exponential or neither? is and is
Step 1: Check that goes up by the same amount each step. It goes up each time.
Step 2: Try differences: Not the same, so it is not linear.
Step 3: Try quotients: The same every time.
Step 4: A constant factor means exponential: and the start at is so
Case A: constant difference
is and is
• Each step adds
• Same difference means linear:
Linear adds; exponential multiplies.
Case B: constant factor below 1
is and is
• Each step multiplies by
• Same factor means exponential, and a factor below means decay:
Shrinking by the same fraction each step is still exponential.
Big mistake to avoid
Growing faster and faster isn't enough. grows faster each step, but the quotients are and not constant, so it is not exponential. Check the quotient, and only when steps evenly.
Cool math secret
Divide neighbors for exponential, subtract neighbors for linear. If neither the difference nor the quotient stays the same, the table is neither.
Worked example
- Check that goes up by the same amount each step.
- Divide each by the one before it.
- A constant factor above 1 means exponential growth.
