Gaius Julius Caesar was a Roman general, statesman, and dictator who played a critical role in the events that led to the end of the Roman Republic and the rise of the Roman Empire. His military campaigns, especially the conquest of Gaul, made him immensely popular. He was assassinated on the Ides of March (March 15, 44 BCE) by a group of senators.
