Historical scene related to Battle of Actium

Octavian's navy defeated Antony and Cleopatra, clearing the path for Augustus and the Roman Empire.

On September 2, 31 BCE, the fleet of Octavian (the future Augustus) defeated the combined forces of Mark Antony and Cleopatra off the coast of Actium in Greece. The battle ended the last major phase of Rome's civil wars after Caesar's assassination. Antony and Cleopatra fled to Egypt and later died by suicide. Octavian returned to Rome, controlled the army and treasury, and in 27 BCE took the title Augustus—the first emperor. The victory at Actium marks the practical birth of the Roman Empire.
