Our solar system
The space neighborhoodThe space neighborhood
Think of the solar system as a town. The Sun is the center of town. The planets live on streets that circle it. A ring of rocky gravel, the asteroid belt, separates the small inner neighborhood from the giant houses farther out. Past the last street are the frozen outskirts, the Kuiper belt, and far beyond that a huge, distant shell called the Oort cloud.
Worked example: put these in order from the Sun outward: the Kuiper belt, Earth, the asteroid belt, Jupiter and the Oort cloud.
Step 1: The Sun is a star at the center. It holds more than 99 percent of all the mass in the solar system.
Step 2: The four inner planets, Mercury, Venus, Earth and Mars, are small and rocky. Earth comes first in our list.
Step 3: The asteroid belt, a ring of rocky and metal chunks, circles between Mars and Jupiter.
Step 4: The four outer planets, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune, are giants made mostly of gas and ice. Jupiter is the closest giant.
Step 5: Past Neptune lies the Kuiper belt, a ring of icy bodies that includes the dwarf planet Pluto. Far beyond it, the Oort cloud is a giant shell of icy objects where many comets come from.
Answer: Earth, the asteroid belt, Jupiter, the Kuiper belt, then the Oort cloud.
Key words
- Planet: a large, round body that orbits the Sun and has cleared its path of other objects.
- Moon: a natural body that orbits a planet.
- Asteroid: a rocky or metal chunk that orbits the Sun, mostly in the asteroid belt.
- Comet: an icy body that grows a glowing tail when its orbit brings it near the Sun.
- Meteor: the streak of light made when a space rock burns up in Earth’s atmosphere.
- Oort cloud: a huge, distant shell of icy objects at the edge of the solar system.
Big mistake to avoid
Mixing up meteoroid, meteor and meteorite. A meteoroid is the rock in space. A meteor is the streak of light as it burns through the air. A meteorite is the piece that reaches the ground.
Cool science secret
Sunlight takes about 8 minutes to reach Earth, but more than 4 hours to reach Neptune.
Try it yourself
Which is farther from the Sun: the asteroid belt or the Kuiper belt?
Answer: the Kuiper belt, which lies past Neptune. The asteroid belt is between Mars and Jupiter.
