Master the rules of English grammar, from parts of speech and sentence structure to punctuation and common mistakes. Build a strong foundation for clear, effective writing.
What you’ll learn
There are eight parts of speech: nouns, verbs, adjectives, adverbs, pronouns, prepositions, conjunctions, and interjections
Every sentence needs a subject (who or what) and a predicate (what the subject does or is)
Subject-verb agreement means a singular subject takes a singular verb, and a plural subject takes a plural verb
Commas have many uses: separating items in a list, joining compound sentences with a conjunction, and setting off introductory phrases
Active voice ("The dog chased the cat") is usually stronger and clearer than passive voice ("The cat was chased by the dog")
Commonly confused words like their/there/they're and its/it's are some of the most frequent grammar mistakes; learn them and you'll avoid errors in almost every paper you write
