Chemistry Formula Sheet
These are the formulas a high school chemistry course uses: density and the mole, solutions, composition, gases, acids and bases, half-life, and energy.
Each formula shows what its letters stand for and their units. Open any one for a worked example and a calculator, or print the sheet to keep beside your lab notes.
Density and the mole
Density Formula
Density is mass per unit volume: how much matter is packed into a space.
- Mass per unit volume (g/mL or kg/m³)
- Amount of matter (g or kg)
- Space occupied (mL or m³)
Mole Conversion
Converts between grams and moles using molar mass.
- Number of moles (mol)
- Mass of the substance (g)
- Mass of one mole of the substance (g/mol)
Solutions
Molar Concentration
Moles of solute per liter of solution.
- Molarity (mol/L (M))
- Amount of solute (mol)
- Volume of solution (L)
Dilution Formula
Relationship between concentration and volume before and after dilution.
- Starting molarity (M)
- Starting volume (L)
- Final molarity (M)
- Final volume (L)
Composition
Percent Composition
Mass percentage of an element in a compound.
- Percentage by mass (%)
- Mass of the element (g)
- Total mass of compound (g)
Empirical Formula
Simplest whole number ratio of elements in a compound.
- Simplified mole ratio for element i
- Moles of element i (mol)
- Smallest number of moles among the elements (mol)
Gases
Ideal Gas Law
Relates pressure, volume, amount, and temperature of an ideal gas.
- Gas pressure (atm)
- Gas volume (L)
- Amount of substance (mol)
- Universal gas constant ≈ 0.0821 (L·atm/(mol·K))
- Absolute temperature in Kelvin (K)
Acids and bases
pH Calculation
Measures acidity or basicity of a solution.
- pH value (0-14 scale)
- Concentration of H⁺ ions (mol/L)
pOH Calculation
Measures hydroxide ion concentration.
- pOH value
- Concentration of OH⁻ ions (mol/L)
pH-pOH Relationship
Sum of pH and pOH always equals 14 at 25°C.
- pH value
- pOH value
Nuclear decay and energy
Half-Life
Time for half of a substance to decay or be eliminated.
- Amount remaining after time t
- Starting amount
- Time that has passed (time units)
- Time for half to decay (time units)
Gibbs Free Energy
Determines spontaneity of a reaction.
- Change in Gibbs free energy (J/mol)
- Change in enthalpy (J/mol)
- Absolute temperature (K)
- Change in entropy (J/(mol·K))
