Alvin Cullum York was a Tennessee farm boy who initially sought exemption from the draft as a conscientious objector due to his religious beliefs. After much reflection, he decided to serve. On October 8, 1918, during the Meuse-Argonne Offensive in France, Corporal York led an attack on a German machine gun nest. Almost single-handedly, he killed 25 German soldiers and captured 132 others. He was promoted to sergeant and received the Medal of Honor. York became one of the most celebrated American heroes of the war and his story was later told in the 1941 film "Sergeant York."
